What is Beyond Biology Book Club?
Beyond Biology Book Club is a monthly reading adventure that complements the Every Body’s Human Biology curriculum. Each month, Dr. Robin selects a middle-grade novel where the main character has a medical condition or disability. This book club offers a unique way to connect with the science you’re learning.
Why a book club?
The medical conditions we study in Every Body’s Human Biology are often part of real people’s lives. These conditions are just one facet of who a person is, not their entire story. The Beyond Biology Book Club helps students understand this by exploring characters who face medical challenges while still living full and engaging lives. The books chosen for the club generally don’t focus solely on the medical condition; it’s woven into the story, just as it is in real life.
Parents receive a list of all the books for the year so they are able to easily plan ahead.
What to expect:
- Monthly Read: Each month, participants read a new middle-grade novel chosen by Dr. Robin.
- Medical Condition Focus: The chosen book will feature a character with a medical condition or disability, connecting to topics covered in the core curriculum.
- Learning from Stories: By reading about these characters, students gain a deeper understanding of the human impact of medical conditions and develop empathy and understanding.
- Dr. Robin’s Insights: Each month, Dr. Robin will teach about the medical condition featured in the chosen book, providing additional context and scientific information.
Beyond Biology Book Club is a fantastic opportunity to:
- Connect science to real life: See how the concepts learned in Every Body’s Human Biology relate to real-life experiences.
- Develop empathy and understanding: Learn about different perspectives and experiences related to medical conditions and disabilities.
- Engage with literature: Discover new and exciting middle-grade novels.

While the book club is an optional addition to the core curriculum, it offers a powerful way to enhance learning and broaden understanding.
